Fortinet's Secure Networking certification path has entered a new phase in 2026. Following the restructuring of the Fortinet NSE Certification Program on July 15, 2026, professionals can now progress through clearly defined NSE levels while building increasingly advanced skills in network security, administration, integration, troubleshooting, and architecture. Two important exams in this updated path are NSE6_FNC_AD-7.6 Fortinet NSE 6 - FortiNAC-F 7.6 Administrator and NSE7_FSN_AR-7.6 Fortinet NSE 7 - Secure Networking 7.6 Architect. Both belong to the Secure Networking track, but they validate different levels and types of expertise.

 

For candidates planning a Fortinet Secure Networking certification journey, understanding the relationship between these exams is important. NSE6_FNC_AD-7.6 can be used to earn NSE 6 in Secure Networking, while NSE7_FSN_AR-7.6 is the required architect-level exam for NSE 7 in Secure Networking. They can therefore form a logical progression for some candidates, especially those who want to move from specialized network access control administration toward broader enterprise network security architecture.

Effective July 15, 2026, Fortinet expanded its certification program from five certification levels to eight. However, there is an important qualification. NSE 6 is not strictly required before NSE 7. Fortinet states that candidates for NSE 7 in Secure Networking must hold NSE 4 and either NSE 5 in Secure Networking or NSE 6 in Secure Networking, in addition to passing the NSE 7 Secure Networking exam.

 

Therefore, a candidate who earns NSE 6 in Secure Networking through NSE6_FNC_AD-7.6 gains a valid route toward the NSE 7 certification, but candidates who already hold NSE 5 in Secure Networking can also progress directly to the NSE 7 exam.

 

NSE6_FNC_AD-7.6: Building Advanced FortiNAC Administration Skills

The NSE6_FNC_AD-7.6 Fortinet NSE 6 - FortiNAC-F 7.6 Administrator exam is one of the available exams for earning the NSE 6 in Secure Networking certification.

 

Fortinet defines NSE 6 in Secure Networking as validation of a professional's ability to deploy, manage, and monitor advanced Fortinet network security products. To earn the certification, candidates must hold NSE 4 FortiOS and pass one qualifying NSE 6 Secure Networking exam within the required two-year period. FortiNAC Administrator is currently one of those exam options.

 

NSE6_FNC_AD-7.6 focuses specifically on FortiNAC-F 7.6 and its role in controlling and monitoring devices connecting to an enterprise network. Candidates are expected to understand far more than basic configuration. The exam evaluates applied knowledge through configuration information, operational scenarios, and troubleshooting situations. FortiNAC high availability and FortiNAC Manager are also included.

NSE7_FSN_AR-7.6: Moving from Administration to Secure Networking Architecture

The NSE7_FSN_AR-7.6 Fortinet NSE 7 - Secure Networking 7.6 Architect exam operates at a broader and more advanced level.

 

Rather than concentrating on one product such as FortiNAC, NSE7_FSN_AR-7.6 evaluates whether a candidate can design, administer, and support secure SD-WAN and enterprise security infrastructures consisting of multiple FortiGate devices. The exam incorporates operational scenarios, incident analysis, advanced FortiGate configuration, FortiManager and FortiAnalyzer integration, SD-WAN, routing, VPN technologies, and troubleshooting.

 

The exam contains 40–50 questions and provides 60–70 minutes for completion. Its tested product versions include FortiGate 7.6, FortiManager 7.6, and FortiAnalyzer 7.6.

For professionals whose work involves FortiNAC-F, network access control, endpoint visibility, and Security Fabric integration, Path B can be particularly relevant. NSE6_FNC_AD-7.6 allows candidates to develop specialized operational expertise before moving into the broader architectural topics assessed by NSE7_FSN_AR-7.6.

 

Candidates who already hold NSE 5 in Secure Networking, however, do not need to complete NSE6_FNC_AD-7.6 simply to become eligible for NSE 7. They can follow the NSE 5 route and focus their preparation directly on the NSE7_FSN_AR-7.6 Secure Networking Architect exam.

 

How to Prepare for Both Secure Networking Exams

1. Build a strong FortiOS foundation first. NSE 4 is not simply an administrative prerequisite. Understanding FortiGate configuration, policies, interfaces, routing, Security Fabric concepts, and troubleshooting creates the foundation needed for both higher-level certifications.


2. Use hands-on FortiNAC practice for NSE6_FNC_AD-7.6. Spend significant time on deployment, device discovery, profiling, access control, enforcement, HA, security policies, firewall tags, FortiGate integration, FortiNAC Manager, and troubleshooting. Fortinet recommends the FortiNAC 7.6 course and labs together with the FortiNAC-F Administration, Deployment, and Manager documentation.

 

3. Expand from product administration to architecture for NSE7_FSN_AR-7.6. Study FortiGate 7.6 together with FortiManager and FortiAnalyzer. Enterprise Firewall and SD-WAN knowledge is especially important because Fortinet identifies these areas as recommended preparation for the new comprehensive NSE 7 Secure Networking exam.

 

4. Give extra attention to routing, SD-WAN, and advanced IPsec. Rules and routing and Advanced IPsec can each represent as much as 35% of NSE7_FSN_AR-7.6. Candidates should be able to analyze BGP, OSPF, SD-WAN rule selection, routing decisions, IPsec design, ADVPN behavior, dual-hub architectures, and multiregion deployments—not simply recognize their definitions.

 

5. Practice scenario-based troubleshooting rather than memorization. Both exams emphasize applied knowledge. Work through configuration outputs, failed deployments, connectivity problems, policy behavior, routing decisions, authentication issues, HA failures, and integration scenarios. Practice questions can help identify weak areas, but hands-on configuration and troubleshooting should remain a core part of preparation.

 

An Important NSE 7 Exam Delivery Change

Candidates planning their NSE7_FSN_AR-7.6 exam should also be aware of an upcoming testing-policy change. Fortinet has announced that beginning September 21, 2026, remote OnVUE delivery will no longer be available for NSE 7 examinations. NSE 7 exams will then be delivered only through Pearson VUE-authorized testing centers. NSE 4, NSE 5, and NSE 6 exams will continue to support both OnVUE and testing-center delivery.

For candidates who choose the FortiNAC route at NSE 6, the progression can be especially valuable: earn NSE 4, use NSE6_FNC_AD-7.6 to achieve NSE 6 in Secure Networking, then broaden your skills and prepare for NSE7_FSN_AR-7.6. But Fortinet's current rules also provide flexibility—an active NSE 5 in Secure Networking can satisfy the intermediate requirement for NSE 7 as well.

 

The most effective approach is therefore not simply to chase the next exam number. Candidates should select the certification level and exam that align with their current responsibilities, build substantial hands-on experience, and use each stage to move from operational competence toward the architectural expertise expected at NSE 7.
